Sad news today. Sir Edmund Hillary has passed away. He was a true adventurer, devoted humanitarian and all around great person. He was a humble bee-keeper from New Zealand, best know for being the first person, along with Tenzing Norgay, a native Sherpa, to reach the summit of Mt. Everest and safely climb back down on May 29, 1953.
I had the honor of meeting Hillary during one of his visits to Colorado and had the unique opportunity to spend some time with him in Nepal. I participated in helping him dedicate a school in the Solu Khumbu district, the home of Mt. Everest. Sir Ed was a hero and a true inspiration for me personally.
I recall one afternoon while sitting on a rock bench with Hillary at the Tengboche Monastery, he turned to me and said, “It’s not the mountain we conquer, it’s ourselves.”
We will miss you Sir Ed… Namaste and “Sherpa speed” on your way to your next adventure.

I’m often asked what my secret is to motivating and inspiring audiences with my Everest – Spirit of Adventure keynote. I believe the key is three-fold. 1. Be yourself. 2. Be your message. 3. Be passionate.
- Be true to yourself. Just like in politics, an audience can sniff out a fake in less than a minute. Being true to yourself means speaking, motivating and inspiring audiences about something you live out in your own life everyday.
- Be true to your message. If your message is to create adventure in your life then your life needs to reflect the motivation you are trying to build in others.
- Be passionate. If you aren’t motivated and inspired by your own story, don’t expect anyone else to be. Now, I don’t mean over the top ego rah rah, just the opposite. You need to be both humble and passionate about your topic. If you believe adventure is important but you are not personally inspired by adventure then don’t try to fake the passion. I have climbed many mountains and had many adventures in my life. From Wall Street to Mt. Everest, from the Andes to Africa, I’ve made incredible friends along the way. For the last 20+ years I have been sharing my adventures as the keynote speaker for some of the world’s most prestigious companies and prominent associations. It is important for me to thank my climbing partners, friends and family for all their support.
I am especially grateful to my clients, IBM, The Washington Post, ABC, Kodak, Nordstrom, Merck, National Geographic, Wells Fargo, Bank of America and hundreds more. I’ve shared the stage with presidents, politicians and celebrities. It’s been a wonderful adventure and I have many of you to thank for my success. In 1986 I named my company, The Spirit of Adventure because it summed up what I believe is one of the key elements to success and happiness…the willingness to discover adventure in your life.
This blog is dedicated to exploring adventure from multiple perspectives. Keep in mind, what is an adventure for me, may not be for you. This blog will be a forum where you and I will share our past, present and future adventures and the lessons learned. You will enjoy the interviews, videos and podcasts from other adventurers as we capture their experiences.Subscribe now to catch it all. Let the adventure begin. Brian OMalley
